Are you getting enough calcium?
Greens and beans. Say it after me; greens. and. beans.
75% of Americans don’t get enough calcium. Not 75% of vegan Americans, but 75% of all Americans.
My smoothie this morning (recipe below) had 68% of my daily requirements! I say this not to boast… ok, I say this not ONLY to boast, but to prove, once again that a morning smoothie is a great way to get what you need for your day.
Aggressive marketing and lobbying by our friend The Dairy Council has produced a widespread belief that cow’s milk products are an outstanding source, and it is true that they have high levels of bio-available calcium. That’s the only place they get it right though, because ironically, studies have shown that people who consume animal protein excrete significantly increased amounts of calcium in their urine. And the consumption of dairy is also linked to prostate, breast, and ovarian cancer… and don’t even get me started on its contribution to antibiotic resistance.
Ask yourself this question, are there any other species which voluntarily seek out and consume the milk of another species past infancy? The answer of course is no. Why then would it follow that cow’s milk is essential to our vibrant and ongoing good health?
Then ask yourself this question, where do cows get their calcium? You guessed it! Greeeeeeens.
Calcium is an essential nutrient, and plant sources are 50-60% bioavailable to humans, compared to cow’s milk bioavailability of about 30%.
Eat your greens, ladies and gentlemen, and look forward to strolling around your retirement community one day with that smug sense of satisfaction that can only come from one thing. Resistance to hip fractures.
